In SAP’s latest exhibition – The Metaverse: Dreamland or Dystopia?– thirteen artists, working in a variety of media, each reflect on their response to how reality and virtuality are converging. They playfully explore space and time, traversing the real, the augmented, and the virtual worlds.

When the Internet became mainstream around the year 2000, it transformed our lives. Since then, technology has advanced rapidly, and we are now poised for the next revolution: artificial intelligence. With the pace of progress accelerating, we will be forced to decide where we stand on the metaverse. Will our head and heart agree? Do we understand all the implications? Do we need to look deeper? What felt until recently like science fiction is now reality. If artificial intelligence is already being described as superior to our own, then we have reached the point where the debate is no longer just about the pros and cons of technological progress. Beyond that, and as we reexamine our relationship with machines and our role in the economy, we will have to speak openly about the hidden dangers too.
From different angles, the artists address the question of whether the metaverse is a dreamland, dystopia, or something in between. By engaging playfully with technology’s capabilities, asking pointed questions, and probing beneath virtual surfaces, they guide the viewer into the space between the real world and augmented reality. They impart their thoughts on what defines us as human, and show us the blurring distinctions between human and machine. Inviting a broad range of interpretations was deliberate here. Because, clearly, the question this exhibition explores relates not just to technology, but also to how we want our future to look and our ability to shape it.
The Metaverse: Dreamland or Dystopia? is about art – the artists’ responses and how they express them. Images, sculptures, installations, videos, and a virtual gallery take us on a journey through the real and the digital, the two dimensional and the three dimensional – and back again.
The statements the artists have provided invite the observer to reflect and to feel the response the artworks evoke.
